The white canvas, lace-up Keds is one of the most recognizable sneaker designs.
Designed a century ago in 1916, it has been updated using prints, colors and a variety of materials.
This year’s collection, dubbed New Court Classics, combines smooth and perforated leather uppers with the brand’s traditional rubber soles.
“There are six new styles this year that we’re optimistic will appeal to a lot of young women,” said Keds’ retail division head Karen Ong.
“All the styles can be paired with shorts, jeans or a dress. They range from the classic to the trendy,” she added.
Although Keds has long held a very casual vibe, its origins lie firmly in sports. In the early 1920s, the brand’s iconic silhouette was known as the “Champion” because it was worn by champions in tennis, track and field, basketball, football and baseball.
The late tennis legend Helen Wills Moody won 31 Grand Slam titles. Moody, known on the court as “Little Miss Poker Face,” went on to collect 19 of those titles wearing a pair of white Keds.
At the recent launch of the New Court Classics, a mini fashion show was held at Manila Polo Club, with Keds-shod models dressed in cropped tops, short tennis skirts and a series of athleisure looks.
Guests tried their luck at parlor games and cooled down with scoops of ice cream and cold drinks.
