Shop like mother, or like daughter

Mother’s Day may be over, but it doesn’t mean the habit of treating our moms right and spending some time with her also ends. As a mom myself, I know how it feels to be left behind by my growing children.

I nurse a constant fear that they’ll live their own lives faster than I want, spending more time with others than with me.

It took an exclusive shopping event at SM Aura with moms I know and their daughters I admire to make me realize that growing old isn’t all too bad. If it means being able to do my favorite hobby of scouting luxuries in the city with my boys any time we want—granted, they don’t end up as crazed shopaholics like girls—then Mother’s Day won’t always feel like the only chance to spend time with our loved ones.

There are many ways to thank our moms—and our kids—that don’t involve grand plans and trips outside the city. One great way to show our appreciation is by shopping with them and gifting them unique products they deserve.

The time I spent tailing mother-daughter duos Candy and Jacque Dizon, Bambina and Jessica Wise, and Judith and Janina Manipol, I’ve seen a wide range of “giftable” brands available only in SM Aura that will please anybody at any time of the year. (By the way, they have so many new brands that I suggest you ask a personal shopper to lead you to even more items.)

Gifts that keep on giving

For moms who love all things domestic, add touches of sophisticated china and stoneware to mealtimes, and it’ll be just like dining in fancy hotels and restaurants.

Claytan tableware is a beautiful addition to her dining set. Another option would be the Noritake chinaware, a favorite of the Japanese imperial household and a constant feature in government banquets.

Top this luxurious experience with English brand John Lewis and its quality glassware; pour all your fine wines and spirits into this crystal fine-tuned to bring out the flavor of every drink.

Extend this fantasy to the bedroom by gifting her duvets by Margaret Muir. These covers are made from 100-percent pure cotton percale and embroidered, not printed, with meticulous design.

For something more offbeat and rock ’n’ roll, French Bull offers mugs with quirky designs sure to perk up even the young ones. The brand stands out for its rebellious art, elevating mugs from being boring gifts to unique ones.

Speaking of perking up, Breville espresso makers like the Barista Express bring the café to your home. Join in playing pretend master brewers as you experiment with beans in this easy-to-use, precise machine.

I understand, however, that not all moms and daughters enjoy these homey things. Don’t worry, there are plenty of other choices for the adventurous ones. If your mom likes the outdoors, shop for a functional knapsack with great storage like FjallRaven Kåken bags. Designed to spare the backs of schoolchildren, these bags will surely lighten the load for you, too.

Remind each other to hydrate on long, tedious trips with stainless steel tumblers from Klean Kanteen. These insulated products come with innovative cap designs and vacuum insulation, making them perfect and safe.

Protect yourselves from the sun with Ray-Ban shades that not only shield your eyes from the harmful rays, but also lend a whole lot of style.

To flaunt ultimate sophistication together, buy matching rose gold Michael Kors watches that look good on any occasion. Gift your mother or daughter with time, too, as you make up for what you’ve lost.
