London is poised to be the most popular destination on Airbnb this summer, with the British capital topping a list of the most-booked destinations during the Memorial Day weekend in Airbnb’s summer trends report.
In fact, despite the spate of terror attacks in Europe, the Old World dominates Airbnb’s list of most-booked destinations, with big, cosmopolitan cities taking eight of the top 10 spots.
After London, Paris and Barcelona are the most popular destinations. The balance is represented by Japan, with Tokyo and Osaka cracking the top 10 list.
The short-term vacation rental site says they project a banner year in summer travel for 2017, with bookings for Memorial Day alone—which marks the unofficial start to summer in the United States—doubling over 2016.
This weekend, more than 1 million guests from the U.S. will be staying in an Airbnb home. The site also released stats on emerging, top-trending destinations this summer.
Leading the list is Havana, Cuba, which saw an impressive 940 percent growth in Memorial Day bookings this year compared to the same period last year.
The seaside town of La Ciotat in the south of France between Marseilles and Cannes, also saw a 675 percent growth in bookings. Memorial Day weekend also coincides with a holiday weekend in France, when many choose to sunbathe in one of many of France’s beach towns.
Rounding out the top five trending destinations this weekend are Salou, Spain (463 percent growth) and Tainan, Taiwan (424 percent).
Meanwhile, some of the most popular activities through Airbnb’s program Experiences in London include hat-making workshops and wallpaper printing.
In Paris, the fine arts and museums are the most popular activities, while visitors to Barcelona are more inclined to book food and wine tours.
