How do you keep an airport that sees nearly 80 million passengers a year completely spotless?
NHK World reported that 600 cleaners on various shifts a day contribute to Tokyo International Airport’s being cited as the cleanest worldwide. It is no mean feat, as it is the fifth busiest airport in the world.
But what amazed netizens in the video report was the impeccable work ethic of one of its employees, Sachiko Suzuki.
While cleaning, Suzuki inspects every small corner, identifying dirt where most people wouldn’t bother. She says she’s extra careful because of the upcoming Olympics that the country will host, though it appears her attention to detail is something that isn’t reserved just for special occasions.
The video shows her thoroughly cleaning a toilet, and even using a mirror to check for dirt in unseen areas.

Netizens praised the cleaner, calling her inspirational. Some also lauded Japan for their culture of labor where even tasks such as cleaning are given importance.
There were also observations that this penchant for cleanliness was beyond the airport.
Japan is known to groom citizens’ cleaning habits in childhood. With this admirable culture, it appears people like Suzuki will not relinquish the airport’s top cleanliness spot anytime soon. Niña V. Guno/JB
