The Google Arts & Culture platform has launched a new online exhibition called “We Wear Culture: The Stories Behind What We Wear.” It was officially unveiled at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, one of the 180 partner institutions around the world contributing to the project.

Like other Google Arts & Culture projects, the latest offering makes thousands of documents and resources available to web users with a passion for fashion or keen to find out more about the history of the industry and the major trends that left their mark on history.

Exploring the past, the present and the future, experts from all around the world help tell the story of clothing, looking at how fashion shaped history and sometimes challenged established customs and morals.

The exhibition offers a visual review of the major icons of fashion, the movements that shaped history, the behind-the-scenes makings of fashion and the skill and expertise of designers, as well as fashion’s relationship with the arts. Major trends in the history of fashion are examined in a series of videos by YouTuber Ingrid Nilsen.

In addition, the most prestigious museums open their doors, allowing virtual visitors to admire a host of pieces, works and exhibits celebrating fashion through the ages. A color palette of fashion reviews the rich colors of the world’s textiles, dresses and accessories. In total there are 30,000 fashion pieces and more than 400 exhibits accessible online.

Finally, thanks to Street View, it is possible to visit several places associated with fashion and style in more than 40 countries, from the Versailles Palace in France to the Royal College of Art in London, the Kyoto Costume Institute in Japan, the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum in Florence and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
