20 years later, man fulfills promise to marry his preschool sweetheart | Lifestyle.INQ

As a three-year-old, Matt Grodsky would announce to the class that he would marry his crush, Laura Scheeler.

It was easy to see why: he and Scheeler enjoyed each other’s company, from playing games to skipping nap time.

“Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the ‘right way’ to properly eat string cheese. We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time,” he shares in the Instagram account The Way We Met.

“Laura and I met in preschool. One of my very first memories is of being 3 years old and standing up in front of my pre-school class, declaring that I would marry her someday. As kids, Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the ‘right way’ to properly eat string cheese. We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time. I was enamored with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day. Eventually, we lost touch upon entering our Elementary School days and for the next seven years, our family’s annual Christmas cards was the only way we ever saw each other’s faces. It wasn’t until High School that we reconnected by happenstance through a mutual friend. Within two weeks, we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend. We continued to date through out all of High School, even though we went to different schools. We even stuck together long-distance while attending colleges in different states. We remained a resilient couple until May 23rd, 2015 when I decided to stay true to my preschool pledge and make Laura my wife. I proposed to her at the place it all began… our preschool classroom.”

They parted ways in elementary when they attended different schools, and wouldn’t meet again until high school. In a Huffington Post interview, Scheeler said she saw Grodsky’s number on a friend’s phone and the friend offered to set them up.

After reconnecting, they hit it off and were officially a couple in two weeks.

They remained together even if they went to separate high schools and eventually, to colleges in different states.

Grodsky knew he had to make good on his preschool declarations. In May 2015, during the end of their third year of college, he decided to propose to her where it all began.

Scheeler thought they were having a picnic at their preschool to celebrate the end of the school year, and was shocked when Grodsky went down on one knee.

“The whole car ride to the preschool she kept asking me why I seemed anxious. I kept checking my pocket when she wasn’t looking to make sure the ring was still there,” he related to Huffington Post.

She said yes, and the pair married in December 2016, 20 years after they met in preschool.
