Janelle Monáe’s new music video is a cinematic celebration of “pussy power”

Janelle Monáe is not one to go quietly. As her last few releases have proven, she’s here to break down doors and make art her battle cry. Last February, the singer dropped an electric, bi-furious music video for her single, “Make Me Feel,” featuring rumored lover Tessa Thompson. The two were less than coy about their intentions, which is to embrace unapologetic queerness.

This time, Janelle ditches her neon tights for a pair of vagina pants in her music video for “PYNK.”

Directed by Emma Westenberg, the pink desert-set video opens with Janelle, Tessa, and their girl gang rolling up in an equally pink Cadillac. What follows is a celebration of femininity and empowerment, in a utopia without a single man in sight. “‘PYNK’ is a brash celebration of creation. Self-love. Sexuality. And pussy power!” describes Janelle. “PYNK is the color that unites us all, for pink is the color found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere…”

While most “pussy power” call to arms tend to be exclusive, Janelle clarifies that it is more a state of mind than it is anatomically specific. In a tweet, she emphasizes her music’s dedication to all kinds of women. What a true queen.
