The world’s best wines, in the metro’s most exclusive club

“A tour of the world through a wine glass” is how wine expert Cyril Addison describes the event dubbed “Uvas 2017” scheduled July 14 at the exclusive Manila House in Bonifacio Global City (BGC).

Manila House has tapped Addison to ferry guests to a virtual journey around the globe through a sampling of the best and new wines by 10 exhibitors. The guests will also have the rare chance to see what the clubhouse looks like.

“A pinot noir from New Zealand will taste completely different, probably more fruity, (compared to) a burgundy pinot noir from France that is actually earthy,” Addison explained.

“Even if it is the same grape, the wine will be completely different because of factors like the way it is made, where it grows, the temperature, space, soil condition and climate. They make a difference,” he added.

“In a warmer place, the wine tends to be fruity,” he continued. “A cooler temperature tends to make wine more earthy and elegant. To me, when I first taste wine, it’s an experience about people you drink with, where it comes from. It gets people really excited.”

Discounted prices

Addison sat down with Lifestyle for a preview of the bespoke event that runs from 3 to 10 p.m. on July 14. He said Uvas 2017 promises “the best wines picked from the regions they are known for” as he tipped his hat to the exhibitors/wine suppliers.

The supplier Brumms, for example, sources the best wines from Argentina, Chile and Germany. AWC features those from Italy and Spain, while Philippine Wine Merchants boasts the pride of France and New Zealand. Zen Asia also sources from New Zealand as well as Australia.

Other suppliers participating in the event are Premium Wine Exchange, Grandcru, Silver Secrets, Future Trade Inc., Penta AG Merchants and Sommelier Selections.

“We want people to try different wines, from entry level to premium. This event also gives suppliers an opportunity to showcase their range as well,” Addison said.

Complementing the wines are hors d’oeuvres by chef Gilbert Pangilinan. Guests who opt to buy wines from the Uvas 2017 selection will enjoy “very discounted prices” during the event.

VIP tickets

VIP tickets to Uvas 2017 will cover access to the wine event, P1,500 worth of stubs, access to Manila House dining establishments and access to two of 10 wine appreciation classes that Manila House will offer in its Escolta and Binondo rooms.

Regular tickets will allow guests access to the bespoke wine event and P1,000 worth of stubs for the wines.

Manila House is a by-invitation-only club with members from business, creative, cultural and intellectual communities.

To date, it has four dining establishments including Avenue Bar, the Bonifacio Lounge, Issho (Japanese cuisine) and The Grill. Anahaw, which will feature Filipino food, will open soon.

Manila House hosts exhibits, popup shops, film showings, lectures and talks organized regularly to “inspire, stimulate, educate, amuse and entertain” its members.

A Manila House insider said Uvas 2017 is meant to kick off a series of monthly events “that will give our visitors the opportunity to see what the VIPs are doing.”
