The last half of the year is here, and I can feel the season, from the cold wind breaking into the room to the patchy drizzle this morning—this semblance of fall or autumn means a change in skincare, makeup and fashion.
Bundle up your breezy, light clothes to transition into more dramatic looks. International designers have months ago predicted on what will trend this season. Now it’s time for us to try them.
Bedazzled hair clips
The holidays bring more glitz and glam. Bedazzled hair clips and barrettes add color to your mane.
Marchesa had models sport gem-encrusted clips to go with their ethereal gowns, enhancing the romanticism of her designs. These clips could work as either a conversation piece or a complementary accessory that magnifies your whole look for the night—or day.
If you want to keep your hair clean but don’t want to take out the sparkle, put some metallic stuff. This season’s palette leans toward foil-looking silvers as opposed to time-tested shades of gold.
This year’s preferred metal undergoes various iterations. Commes des Garcons and Chanel have chosen silver that reminds me of insulators and heated lunch. Michael Kors and Christopher Kane have also adopted silver and its sleekest sheen, while Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen have polished their silvers into flashy, blinding pieces.
Color pop
Remnants from summer are this season’s wildcards. Florals have been spotted on the runway. Not as cheerful as the past season’s blooms, fall florals are more somber in both shape and color.
Gucci handpicked flowers with less pomp, as seen in this piece flaunting florals with their petals downcast.
Prada debuted a coat with softer silhouettes of its chosen blue blooms. Tory Burch took after Chinese porcelain jars, evoking royalty and Old World femininity.
Acne Studios, on the other hand, practiced minimalism by sprinkling miniature yellow and purple flowers on a white one-piece.
Color is also present this season. Despite the gloomy cold, we’ll see an influx of neons and bright hues—thanks to the recurring throwback to the ’80s and its wild looks. The difference is in how it’s worn.
A while back, color appeared prominently on the lips. This season, it’s all about painting the eyes with complementary colors. Color-block your lids with colored eyeliners, whether they come in crayons or as liquid paints.
Emilio de la Morena debuted a bright blue-and-orange eye look, while a few models for Vivienne Westwood and Stella Jean donned lids smudged with shades of azure. You can also try on colored mascaras like they did at Pucci to add not just drama, but also whimsy.
Speaking of blues, the warmest color (at least according to filmmaker Abdellatif Kechiche) also finds new form in the surge of denim this season. Forget bleached jeans and faded jackets and behold denims in different styles.
Marc Jacobs and Public School used a more monotonous, grayish and contemporary shade, while Sacai chose a concentrated hue of blue with indigo undertones. Versace, however, went for embroidered black denim.
