The Department of Filipino of Ateneo de Manila University and Ateneo University Press will launch professor Nerissa Balce-Cortes’ new book, “Body Parts of Empire: Visual Abjection, Filipino Images, and the American Archive,” today, Aug. 14, at Faura AVR, Ateneo De Manila University Loyola Schools.
“Body Parts of Empire” is a study of abjection in American visual culture and popular literature from the Philippine-American War (1899–1902). The author will deliver a lecture at the launch.
Balce-Cortes received a B.A. in Literature and took doctoral studies at the University of California-Berkeley on a Fulbright scholarship, where she received a Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies before joining SUNY Stony Brook’s Department of Asian and Asian American Studies.
