Benjie Mallari’s nostalgic postwar scenes in ‘Time Passing’

“Somewhere in Divisoria”

Benjie Mallari offers new scenes from a postwar Manila in “Time Passing” depicting locals in their best Sunday garb as well as their common means of transportation.

Choosing to look to the past, Mallari reflects on time passing.

“Time passed, time is always passing, and time will pass,” the artist said. “But we’re still here.”

“Give Peace a Chance”

The show’s title comes from a guitar piece composed by David Foster and performed by Lee Ritenour.

“It is also reminiscent of what Marcus Aurelius said: ‘Time is a sort of a river of passing events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away,’” Mallari said.

“Southbound Stopover”

“Time Passing” is on view until Sept. 10 at Galerie Raphael, Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Madaluyong City.
