Caritas feeds malnourished Baseco kids; Santo Domingo Church to mount ‘Magnificat’ concert Sept. 28

The Augustinian Province of Santo Niño de Cebu-Philippines held its first Pastoral Congress at Santo Niño Spirituality Center in Consolacion, Cebu.

Caritas Manila, the social services and development ministry of the Archdiocese of Manila, is set to graduate 135 children aged 3-12 from malnourishment through its Integrated Nutrition Program.

The children are from Barangay 649, also known as Baseco compound in Navotas. They are Catholics, non-Catholic Christians and Muslims.

Hapag-Asa Integrated Nutrition Program (HAINP) educates families in urban poor communities in Metro Manila, most especially mothers and women, about dietary and nutritional issues.

Augustinian congress

The Augustinian Province of Santo Niño de Cebu-Philippines held its first Pastoral Congress at Santo Niño Spirituality Center in Consolacion, Cebu.

Congress was organized by the province’s Commission on Parish, Lay and Youth headed by Fr. Tomas Banayag Jr., OSA.

Congress theme was “The Augustinian Parish as a Communion of Communities,” in line with the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) nine-year plan for New Evangelization in preparation for the fifth centenary of the coming of Christianity to the Philippines in 2021.

Congress opening Mass presided by Auxiliary Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio of Cebu.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo formally opened the congress with the keynote address, “Year of the Parish: The Parish as Communion of Communities.”

Speakers included Msgr. Francisco Monje (“The Augustinian Priest as a Servant, Evangelizer and Leader to his Parish in the Formation and Promotions of BEC”); Msgr. Sabino Vengco Jr. (“The Concept of Family and Family Life in the Modern World” and “The Family as a Domestic Church: Towards the Strengthening of BEC”); Fr. Conegundo Garganta (youth issues).

St. Augustine and his spirituality were tackled by Fr. Czar Emmanuel Alvarez, OSA and Rev. Rodel Magin, OSA.

Workshop coordinators were Fr. Harold Rentoria, OSA; Fray Jeffrey Uy, OSA; and Eric Divinagracia. Synthesis was given by Fr. Tomas Banayag Jr., OSA. Participants later toured Santo Niño de Cebu Parish in Talisay City and Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish in Cebu City.

‘Magnificat’ concert

To usher in the Holy Rosary month of October, the Santo Domingo Church, which houses the National Shrine of the Nuestra Señora del Santo Rosario La Naval de Manila, will hold a major classical concert, “Magnificat,” on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

The concert will take place after the High Mass and traditional enthronement of the miraculous image of La Naval de Manila at 6 p.m..

Admission is free.

The concert will feature the internationally acclaimed and multi-awarded University of Santo Tomas (UST) Singers and the renowned Tiples de Santo Domingo, the oldest boys choir in the Philippines.

Other performers: UST Symphony Orchestra, Dominican Student-Brothers, UST Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble and UST Coro Tomasino.
