Over the next month, Eames manufacturer Vitra is to open two pop-up boutiques where buyers will be able to create their own custom versions of the iconic Eames plastic chairs.

The first boutique is due to open on Oct. 13 in Zurich, while the second will launch in Amsterdam on Nov. 3, and both will remain open through Jan. 27.

At the pop-up shops, visitors will be able to explore an array of bases, shell colors and upholsteries, then combine them as desired to create their own personalized plastic chairs. Physical displays will allow them to see their options in the flesh, while digital ordering will enable visualization of more than 100,000 configurations, according to Vitra.

Among the most iconic designs of the 20th century, the Eames plastic chairs were created by the design duo for a competition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and are the first plastic chairs to be created using industrial methods.

They are available in 14 models, with varying bases, with and without armrests, and with an optional rocking base. The seat shell comes in 14 colors, while upholstered versions, either fully upholstered or fitted with a seat cushion, come in 28 color choices.
