León Gallery will be holding its 5th Leónexchange Online auction on Oct. 21. This is the first auction where León Gallery will be selling serious jewelry.
“This auction will give excellent opportunity for new art collectors to acquire works of great quality at affordable prices,” said León owner Jaime Ponce de León.
An important piece in the auction, according to Ponce de León, is Nena Saguil’s 1982 pen-and-ink on paper “Cosmos Series,” which shows a constellation of holes that displays the late modern artist’s graphic verve and searing imagination.
Another important piece is by another modern master, Angelito Antonio: his 1984 oil-on-canvas “Women,” which features three seemingly distraught female figures. Naif master Antonio Austria’s 1992 oil-on-canvas “Mag-Ina” shows a mother holding her infant child.
Another important piece is Mauro Malang Santos’ ink-on-paper “The Landing” (Re-enacted), which depicts the arrival of the Spaniards in the Philippines as they are welcomed by the locals.
Part of the sale includes a watercolor painting series by top abstractionist Lao Lianben.
Also a sought-after piece is Norma Belleza’s 1988 oil-on-canvas “Tip Toes,” a still life of a flower vase.
Mark Andy Garcia’s 2010 watercolor-on-paper “Postman Joseph Roulin,” meanwhile, makes a heavy reference to Vincent Van Gogh.
Among other significant pieces are Marcel Antonio’s 2001 acrylic-on-canvas “Free as a Bird”; Arturo Sanchez’s 2004 oil-on-sandblasted mirror “Vulnerable to Deception” 2; Pacita Abad’s mixed-media-on-paper “Join the Circle”; Sofronio Y Mendoza’s 1979 oil-on-paper “Interior”; Jojo Lafranco’s untitled acrylic-on-canvas painting; and Juvenal Sansó’s watercolor-on-paper “Bursting Buds” I. —CONTRIBUTED
