White Flower names Cebu teacher as its first “Unsung Hero”

White Flower Embrocation, in partnership with INQUIRER.net, has announced the first winner of the Unsung Heroes campaign.

The campaign aims to honor individuals from different walks of life who demonstrate compassion, empathy and kindness towards others regardless of their circumstances, and regardless of the lack of visible rewards and recognition.

The first Unsung Hero awardee is Eleonor Migallos-Ty, a 29-year-old teacher who is on her eighth year of teaching at the College of Technological Sciences-Cebu.

Having graduated with a Rotary Club scholarship, Migallos-Ty and three other scholars wanted to pay it forward and pool their resources to support students requiring financial assistance.

“We decided… to save one peso a day from 2010,” she recalls. “Our financial status [wasn’t] sufficient to support a scholarship yet because… it’s only one peso a day so 365 [a year] and there’s only four of us.”

Their initiative coincided with the implementation of the K-12 program, which caused a two-year gap between the last year of high school and the first year of college. Migallos-Ty and her group took the gap as an opportunity to steadily grow their scholarship fund.

As a teacher, Migallos-Ty takes much pride in her work.

“I’ve encountered [difficulties] with… students of different characters [and] family background,” she says. “They are hard to deal with, but if you… find their Achilles’ heel… you’ll be able to jive along with them.”

For her efforts, Jelma Philippines made a surprise visit to Migallos-Ty’s school, and awarded her a cash prize plus a gift pack containing White Flower products and freebies.

White Flower, along with INQUIRER.net, will choose one nominee every month-end as the Unsung Hero of the Month. Aside from the winner, the person who made the winning nomination will also receive Php2,000 and a gift pack courtesy of White Flower.

The campaign will continue until December 2017. From all the winners, White Flower and INQUIRER.net will choose the Ultimate Unsung Hero, who will receive a bonus prize.

On being an unsung hero, Migallos-Ty quipped, “Ang nagbigay sa ‘yo ng tulong, wala nang kailangan sa ‘yong tulong, kaya ibigay mo na sa iba ang kabutihan (Whoever helps you does not need your help, so give your help to those who need it).”
