Beermaker Budweiser is following up on its ambitious plan to become the first beer on Mars, by sending barley seeds into space next month.

After first revealing plans to go where no beer has gone before at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas earlier this year, Budweiser has released an update to prove how serious they are about their Martian dream.

On Dec. 4, when SpaceX rockets off into space on a new cargo supply mission from Cape Canaveral, Florida, it will carry 20 Budweiser Barley seeds.

Once on the International Space Station, the barley will stay in orbit for about one month, before it will hurtle back down to earth to be analyzed.

One of the experiments will look at how barley seeds react in a unique, microgravity environment, while the second will test barley germination.

“Not only will the research offer insights on steps to creating beer on the Red Planet, but it could also provide valuable information on the production of barley and the larger agricultural community here on earth,” reads a press release. JB
