A delightfully surprising pre-Christmas lunch

A lot of our friends have opted to hold pre-Christmas get-togethers to avoid the rush and the horrific traffic situation in the city. Our small barkada had the same idea. But their eyes rolled in disbelief when we informed them what our venue would be, considering we were celebrating the Yuletide season.

But then they (and this diner) had the most delightful surprise and concluded in unison that we selected the most appropriate place.

GelatoFix
G/F BGC Corporate Center, 30th St. cor. 11th Ave., Bonifacio Global City, Taguig

Gelato is the Italian ice cream—smooth, fine and light. The “fix” signifies the Italian tradition of “taking a break,” meaning at the end of the day, the tired workers can sit and enjoy a cup of ice cream, a “gelatofix.” But here, one can also order substantial food, done the Italian way, to satiate a hungry tummy.
This was where we got our pleasant surprise. It is not solely an ice cream parlor, it is a full-service Italian restaurant.

Dining area—Bright and spacious. One’s attention is arrested by the vitrine which has an array of gelato mounds in various flavors. There is a running video showing mouth-watering dishes and a gelato selection.

Service—Very creative in the hands of its Filipino chef, Macky.

Staff—Gracious and knowledgeable. They wear beige uniforms under dark brown aprons.

What to order—As expected, most offerings either carry a dollop of gelato or are laced with Fior de Latte. The creators of the series of gelato are Gelato World Cup Champion master chef Filippo Novelli and gelato master chef David Chang.
The verdict of our group on the dishes we had was unanimous—“everything is good.” The Garden of Passion Salad, done with passion fruit dressing topped by a dollop of gelato, that rendered a unique sweetish flavor; the Italian Beef Stew with rich brown sauce with mashed potatoes; the Crunchy Pork Belly; Big Bird, golden fried chicken, very crispy and seasoned with herbs and spices; and Shrimp Skewers. Each was served with flavored rice and vegetable garnish.

The amazing and truly unexpected surprise was the dessert we chose—the Signature Magic Box—created by Master Chan. It consisted of twin boxes, one over the other, made of toasted bread that looked like wood. The top had buttered bread cubes laced with gelato. When the top box was lifted, it revealed a dip of rich Knam chocolate. It was served with two scoops of gelato. Fantastic end to a delightful celebration!
