A sculpture park and exhibition space are slated to open on the French island of Porquerolles at the start of the summer season, showcasing the contemporary art holdings of the collector Edouard Carmignac.
The Carmignac Collection consists of nearly 300 works, with a focus on American art from the 1960s-80s, including works by Warhol, Lichtenstein and Basquiat. The 20th and 21st centuries are represented through works by Gerard Richter, De Kooning, Raysse and Ed Ruscha, as well as Chinese artist Zhang Huan, Thai artist Korakrit Arunanondchai and Ghanaian sculptor El Anatsui, while fine art photography and photojournalism are also included in the collection.
Visitors to the French island will be able to view the collection amidst the surroundings of a national park and to see temporary exhibitions, a sculpture garden, and a program of cultural events, according to an announcement from the Fondation Carmignac.
Within a Provençal farmhouse, known as the Villa Carmagnac, will be 1,500 square meters of exhibition space, while the outdoor sculpture park will spread over 15 hectares.
Located in the Var in Southern France, Porquerolles is a 7-kilometer-long, 3-kilometer-wide island, not far from Saint-Tropez and accessible by boat. An opening is planned for June 1. JB
