Super’s Christmas wish: help for the victims of ‘Sendong’

Every little holiday mishap we’ve been complaining about (bad traffic, insane crowds, panic at the mall) has paled in comparison to the havoc that Tropical Storm “Sendong” wrought on Mindanao.

The loss of life, home and livelihood has been too much for the affected cities to bear, and it is Super’s wish that our constant readers share some of your blessings to those in need.

A lot of companies and organizations have made it easy for us to give, and we’ve come up with a list of the fastest way to send your gift across:

How to donate:

Philippine Daily Inquirer

Type of donation: Cash/goods

Goods: Bring donations to  Philippine Daily Inquirer office, 1098 Chino Roces Ave., corner  Yague & Mascardo Streets, Makati (please look for Bianca Kasilag or Connie Calagayan).

Globe and Smart offer subscribers an easy way to donate via SMS to the Philippine Red Cross.

Simply text RED <space> AMOUNT to 2899 for Globe or 4143 for Smart.  You can donate in denominations of P5, 25, 100, 300, 500 or 1,000.   It takes less than five minutes to do this.

Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro

Goods:  Drop off goods at the Xavier University Canteen in Corrales Avenue (CDO).  Services: Volunteers are also welcome to help sort out donations and repack them for transport.

Goods:  LBC will deliver donated goods for free to affected cities and provinces.  Donations are accepted at any LBC branch nationwide.  For inquiries, call the LBC hotline at (632) 8585999.

What to donate:

Unsure of what is needed most?  Check out this list:

Food – Donate food that requires minimal preparation, does not spoil easily and is easy to transport, like noodles and canned goods, and biscuits.

Bottled water – They are in need of clean, potable water.

Clean clothes – While they appreciate your efforts to send over clothes, be practical and select stuff like shirts, pants, shorts—basic, casual clothes.  Skip the frilly skirts and beaded dresses.  Footwear like slippers and rubber shoes are also welcome, as well as clean socks and underwear.

Medicine – Pain relievers (both for adult and children), and medical supplies like bandages and gauze are also needed.

Blankets – Lightweight blankets, towels, and mats are also welcome.
