Tanghalang Pilipino’s (TP) latest offering is “Nang Dalawin ng Pag-ibig si Juan Tamad,” an adaptation by Rody Vera of a children’s story by National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin included in his 1979 book, “Pop Stories for Groovy Kids.”
Readers and scholars alike have described this Joaquin story as the correct explanation why Mariang Makiling forever nurses a broken heart, and why Juan Tamad remains a pop idol and a unlikely model for the young. The play is a mash-up of popular folk tales and follows the love triangle among these denizens of Filipino legend—Mariang Makiling, Juan Tamad and Monte (Mt. Banahaw).
“Nang Dalawin ng Pag-ibig si Juan Tamad” features the TP Actors’ Company under the direction of Jonathan Tadioan.
It runs Feb. 16 to March 11 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater).
