Boracay residents can now watch the latest flicks—without leaving the island

CityMall Boracay has two modern theaters, each with a seating capacity of 220.

Boracay residents can now watch the latest flicks in theaters, thanks to the newly opened cinema in CityMall Boracay. Before, islanders would travel to faraway Roxas City in order to watch a movie. The excursion would take four hours by boat and bus, and another four hours for the return trip.

Boracay residents and Aklanons would often schedule these trips beforehand. An entire barangay-load of people would often maximize these sojourns to nearby cities, just to watch a movie. CityMall Boracay will end this. The two-story mall opened their two modern cinemas to the public last December.

“The addition of cinemas in Boracay is part of our thrust of bringing modern conveniences to the island,” said Ferdinand Sia, president of DoubleDragon Properties Corp. “Residents can now enjoy the latest box-office releases without having to travel out, adding more leisure activities to be enjoyed.”

The cinemas at CityMall Boracay has two modern theaters, each with a seating capacity of 220. For its opening salvo, CityMall Boracay screened “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” the second film in the new “Star Wars” trilogy. Kids and adults alike were all cheers at the opening ceremony of the cinemas, both for the new (and only) theaters in the island, and for the new “ Star Wars” flick.

Best island in the world

CityMall Boracay, and the other CityMalls all over the country, is operated by the community mall development arm of DoubleDragon Properties Corp. The company aims to bring modern conveniences to the sleepy, backwater parts of the country.

Present during the opening of the CityMall Boracay cinema were Gerry Ocampo, head for cinema booking and operations of ABS-CBN Cinescreen; Leonard Tirol, Boracay Foundation board member; Bong Tirol; Jonathan Umali, CityMall head for corporate affairs.

The CityMall in Boracay has a total retail space of 1.2 ha, and is located along Beach Road and the Boracay Tambisaan Jetty Port Road, just a short distance from Station 1.

The opening of the mall and its new cinema is timely, as a huge number of workers now flock to Boracay, what with the never-ending development. Despite its congestion, Boracay was still named the number one of the best islands in the world by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards 2017.
