Boracay United to hold ‘massive beach cleanup’ March 24

Details on the event

The Boracay Island community will hold a “Massive Beach Cleanup” along the resort’s famed White Beach on March 24, from 5 to 6 p.m.

The activity is led by Boracay United, a movement organized by concerned residents and business owners on the island. It began on March 21 to show President Duterte and his administration that the Boracay community is joining hands to do its part in helping rehabilitate the crown jewel of Philippine tourism.

The public event may be viewed on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BoracayUnited/

Boracay United has also posted a video, “The Unheard Voices of Boracay,” a documentary of interviews of residents expressing their sentiments on the possible closure of the island. It may be viewed or downloaded from the Boracay United YouTube channel.

On March 17, almost every household and business establishment simultaneously shut off their power at 8:08 p.m. for an island-wide “Symbolic Switch Off For Unity,” with a chain of lights from candles, flashlights and mobile phones. The act was meant to symbolize a closed Boracay, each person’s light  representing a life and a family that would be severely affected by a total closure.

On March 18, residents, workers, their families and tourists held hands as “one family” to form a line of unanimity across White Beach.
