LOOK: Cavite’s ‘cherry blossoms’ charm netizens

Sprays of pink flowers filled trees in a parking lot — could spring have come to this part of the Philippines?

Passersby charmed by the blooming pink trees and carpets of flowers shared their most Instagram-worthy pictures, intriguing netizens of these so-called “sakura” in the Philippines.

Apparently, pictures taken at the De La Salle University Medical Center in Dasmariñas, Cavite were not of Japan’s famous cherry blossoms. These flowering trees appear to be pink tabebuia trees which bloom in March.

The eye-catching trees even had some netizens suggesting that more of them be planted.

Various pink-flowered trees are found in other parts of the country. For instance, Puerto Princesa is known for the Palawan cherry tree or balayong tree (Cassia nodosa), seen in its public spaces. The city government has promoted their blossoms as a tourist attraction through the annual Balayong Festival. JB
