At a time when Filipinos are proudly expressing their sense of nationalism, Glyn Magtibay has her own unique way of showing her love of country.
Her five-piece collection, dubbed “Pearl of the Orient,” depicts the Philippines’ varied culture and traditions through her choices of materials and intricate details.
It also reflects her aesthetic. She leans toward the artsy and romantic, and likes to enhance her pieces with beadwork, colors, embroidery and appliqués. In a show of support, her friends helped her put together one of the pieces, a task that took a week to complete.
After finishing her Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management course at Philippine Christian University, Magtibay enrolled at Slim’s Fashion and Arts School to take up fashion design, dressmaking and other courses.
The budding fashion designer then joined exhibits and design competitions, developing a clientele in the process.
“It’s been a wonderful four years,” she said. “My journey as a fashion designer continues to bloom.”
Her next goals are to study tailoring, also at Slim’s, and put up her own boutique.
