An amusement park ride in eastern China broke down on Monday afternoon, June 18, during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, leaving about 23 tourists hanging stranded in mid-air for two hours.

The flying carousel at the Ganglong Lehui amusement park in Suzhou, Jiangsu province suddenly stopped working and failed to bring its riders back to the ground, according to the South China Morning Post today, June 20.

The amusement park called firefighters for help after spending an hour trying to free the stranded  tourists. As per the Public Security Bureau-run Shaanxi Internet Police, there were zero casualties during the incident.

Meanwhile, a video by Beijing News cited in the report showed the area of the flying carousel ride being surrounded by police officers, lifting the stranded tourists out one-by-one with the use of two cranes.

We received a call at 1.54 and were there in seven or eight minutes,” Cao Yifei, head of Suzhou’s Wuzhong district firefighters, was quoted as saying.

Yifei said they took around two hours to rescue everyone and came to the aid of those who were affected by sunstroke.

“There were four or five children and a few people had sunstroke, so we gave them glucose to drink when they got down,” Yifeo added.

The amusement park is now conducting an investigation on the flying carousel’s breakdown. Cody Cepeda/JB
