Filfest Alabang features pianist Raul Sunico

Filfest Cultural Foundation will present pianist Raul Sunico in a concert of Filipino folk songs and kundiman on July 21, 6 p.m., at Tanghalan Haribon, Insular Life Tower, Filinvest, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

Sunico will play compositions by Nicanor Abelardo, Josefino Cenizal, Ernani Cuenco and Ryan Cayabyab.

Sunico is the former president of Cultural Center of the Philippines and dean of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music, where he’s professor of piano.

He obtained his Bachelor of Music, BS Mathematics and Master of Statistics degrees from the University of the Philippines. He obtained his Master of Music degree from Juilliard School in New York, and Ph.D. in Piano Performance from New York University. He was conferred Doctor of Humanities (honoris causa) by Far Eastern University (FEU) in 2006.

He has written music textbooks for use in Philippine schools, and has received numerous local and international awards for his recordings, books, musical achievements and cultural management work.

‘Feuropa’

To continue with our second-quarter report card on the performing arts, top-level choirs in Metro Manila, Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon (with their screaming supporters) once again had their finest moments in the Feuropa choral competition at the restored art deco auditorium of FEU, an annual project of the university and the European Union.

In their very first competition, the Minstrels of Hope placed second runner-up, with the Philippine Normal University Chorale as first runner-up. And for the seventh time, the Boscorale of Don Bosco Technical Institute was the champion. Why, this choir should now be placed in the Feuropa Hall of Musical Fame. –CONTRIBUTED
