An elderly couple in California were surprised by a burglar who asked for their Wi-Fi password.

A couple in their 60s living in Palo Alto, California, were suddenly awakened by an unknown intruder on July 22 at 12:31 a.m. The intruder, later identified as a 17-year-old minor, surprisingly asked to use the couple’s Wi-Fi password because he was out of data, according to a Palo Alto police statement.

The male victim quickly got up from the bed and confronted the intruder. He then pushed the teen out of the bedroom, down the hall, and out the front door before calling the police. Authorities picked up the teen a few minutes later.

Police officers declined to reveal the teen’s identity due to his being a minor. However, the teen still faced charges for residential burglary, prowling and providing false information to an officer. The teen apparently lied about his identity when initially questioned.

The officers also discovered that the teen had broken into another house the night before for the same reason. The teen was chased out of the house but managed to steal a bicycle to make his escape. He potentially faced additional charges for stealing the bicycle. Fortunately for the owner, the bicycle was recovered by the police.  /ra
