In a world where everything has to be new, trendy and up-to-the-minute, tradition is something I ponder.
These days, tradition takes on an even higher value. It’s easy to be the current buzz, but to be relevant, no matter what happens, is no mean feat.
I think about it while looking at the beautiful offerings at Jul B. Dizon. The jewelry brand is celebrating its 40th anniversary.
Tradition is what drives the Dizon family in the business. It is also what makes special every piece in their shop.
Each design is artistic and has a story. I asked Candy Dizon to elaborate, and here’s what she said:
“My mother involved me in the business at age 7. We were in her jewelry shop on Ortigas Avenue, and my sister and I were tasked with putting the jewelry in boxes so they could be placed in the safe for the night. It is something I still do today.
“We ride with the times. We keep up with trends, and sometimes, even try to be the setter. We have seen the importance of making our presence felt online. Our designs have evolved along with the way our clients prefer their jewelry.
“We are now carefully grooming the fourth generation in the family. My daughters and nieces are of age, and little by little, we are exposing them to this bejeweled world.
“Fortunately, they seem to be interested and see the possibility of being in a work place that they can love, where they can express their creativity, and still earn.
“‘Homage’ is what we’re presenting on our 40th year. Jul B. Dizon designed a number of iconic pieces that we, her children, added our own interpretations. This was a challenge, because we had to create designs outside of our comfort zones. It made us explore deeper. The outcome is truly something that my mom would be totally proud of.”
Investing in suitcases
I’m going away again soon, this time to New York to attend Fashion Week. In every trip, I always examine if my suitcase is still okay. Suitcases can take quite a beating.
That’s why I always say that one should invest in a good brand, especially if you’re serious about checking off every destination on your bucket list.
Tumi, a brand that also takes tradition seriously, is about keeping the travel experience luxurious with durable but stylish products.
This year, it has released a new collection. In blush color with gold trim, the suitcase is beautiful but tough. It is made of self-reinforced polypropylene (SRPP Ballistic), said to be “an ultra-durable material that is both lightweight and incredibly strong.”
The new collection is also made with integrated low-profile TSA locks; sturdy, soft-touch top and side handles reinforced with plastic substructures; and a patented X-Brace 45 telescoping handle system crafted from lightweight yet sturdy aircraft-grade aluminum.
They come in different sizes, created for all types of travelers: International Carry-On, Short Trip Packing Case, and Extended Trip Packing Case.
If you’re considering spending the next few months this year in between flights and pinning different locations in your Instagram feed, this line of suitcases might just be for you.
