‘Hiyang siya sa akin’: Why Kathryn Bernardo’s makeup line is ‘authentic’

“My favorite!” Kathryn Bernardo says of the tints.

When Happy Skin rolled out Generation Happy Skin online days before the official launch, it sold out in eight hours.

Fans didn’t know what shades were included in the cosmetics kits. All they knew was they came from the brand’s collaboration with Kathryn Bernardo and, for them, that was enough.

Having her own makeup line has been her dream, the young actress told Lifestyle backstage at the launch at SM Mega Fashion Hall.

“Working with her was such a revelation. No wonder she’s so loved by her fans,” said Happy Skin cofounder Rissa Mananquil-Trillo.

“She was a Happy Skin user,” Happy Skin cofounder Jacqe Yuengtian-Gutierrez said. “We really wanted to tap her because she really believed in the power of the product.”

It was Kathryn’s makeup artist Denise Go-Ochoa who had introduced her to Happy Skin. Kathryn has sensitive skin and the brand is perfect for her.

“Hiyang siya sa akin,” she said.

Diffusion line

The team decided that Kathryn was the perfect person to collaborate with on the inaugural collection of Generation Happy Skin, the brand’s diffusion line.

In creating the collection, Kathryn, who describes herself as “super kikay,” took the deep dive into the world of makeup. “This is all me,” she said. “Everything—from the packaging, the colors, the font, the names, the shades, lahat. I want people to see me in the collection. I was super involved in developing, creating and testing the products. I really enjoyed the process.”

The collection—Stay Fresh Weightless Pressed Powder, Extra Drama Volumizing Mascara, Perfect Brows Long-Lasting Liquid Pen, Instant Glow Longwear Powder Blush, Kiss & Bloom Water Lip & Cheek Tint, My Lips But Better Ultra Matte Lippie—was inspired by Kathryn’s own makeup routine.

She is a fan of the no-makeup makeup look.

“She knew what she wanted and what she didn’t like,” Rissa said. “She was honest and I found that refreshing. She’s authentic.”

Real

Authenticity is so important to the actress that she fought to use the word as a lipstick shade.

“They found the name too long, baka daw mahirap i-recall. But I said, kung Generation Happy Skin, tapos we’re talking about values, I think yun ang ’di ko kayang i-let go. ’Yun yung important, ’yun ang campaign eh, being the real you. ’Yan talaga ang value na pinakagusto ko, being authentic.”

“Kath is a reminder of what really matters: values like love, courage, freedom, authenticity, spunk, moxie,” Rissa said. “She chose those as the shade names because she wanted na every time you swipe on that lippie or put on that product, you remind yourself of what really matters. I really love how there’s a message in each product.”

Kath and Rissa are both very excited about the Kiss & Bloom Water Lip & Cheek Tint, a water-based tint in four buildable shades.

“I’m a super fan of tints because I always work out and I feel that they’re so easy to use,” said Kathryn. “I didn’t want shades that were too pink or too red. We made different colors to fit different personalities. Personally, I like mixing Prim and Fearless… They don’t blotch even if you blend them on top of powder. How many tints can do that?”

The Extra Drama Volumizing Mascara is another product Kathryn is really proud of.

“I’m a huge fan of mascara. I’m not a fan of falsies. If there’s a makeup product that I need to use every day, it would be mascara and eyelash curler because for me, iba yung effect na buhay yung eyes,” said Kathryn.

There are five My Lips But Better Ultra Matte Lippie shades available. They are ultra-matte but they’re also hydrating, using sunflower seed oil to replenish lips’ moisture.

‘Morena’

Kath’s favorite lippie shades are Moxie and Spunk. She used Moxie in “The Hows of Us,” her upcoming film with Daniel Padilla.

Kath and the Happy Skin team made sure that the products look good on all skin tones—including morena girls like Kath.

Nothing in the collection costs more than P499. Kath wanted to make sure the price points were accessible to her fans.

“But even with those price points, we really perfected the formula first para skin-caring pa rin even for people like Kath who have sensitive skin,” said Rissa.
