Top contemporary artists pay tribute to Duemila founder

Silvana Diaz

Top contemporary artists Jonathan Olazo, R.M de Leon and Trek Valdizno will mount the joint exhibit, “An Italian in Manila: An Exhibition Tribute to Silvana Diaz (43 years of Philippine Art Patronage),” at Galeria Duemila, Sept. 1-29. Diaz founded Duemila 43 years ago; it’s one of the biggest and most respected galleries in the Philippine art world.

The son of the much-revered late abstract master Romulo Olazo, Jonathan, also an abstractionist, graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts with a major in Painting in 1992. He received Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1998.

Valdizno is also a graduate of UP and has exhibited in Australia, Hong Kong and France. He’s known for large-scale abstract compositions.

De Leon is the first Filipino to receive the Studio Arts in Painting award in Vermont Studio Center in the United States, and received the Thirteen Artists Award in 1990. His works draw inspiration from storybook characters and cartoons, evoking childhood memories.

Duemila is at 210 Loring St., Pasay City. Call 8319990.
