Out-of-this-world questions from readers

I have been writing this column for so long on topics beyond science and organized religion, and sometimes I get questions from readers that are out of this world, hilarious or simply unexpected. So, let me feature some of these questions here.

1) “There are numerous quotes about staying away from negative people because they pull you down. Now my question is: How do you leave your negative husband or make him leave you?” This question is followed by a litany of the negative traits of her husband.

My reply: I am neither a psychologist nor a marriage counselor. It is best to address this question to the experts. My field of interest lies in the systematic investigation, research and analysis of things, phenomena and events that lie beyond the field of orthodox science and religion, topics that mainstream scientists completely ignore.

But if you want me to answer your question from a higher consciousness point of view, I would say that you are with the people you are with in this lifetime because you attracted them to work out your karma with them. What you should do is find out why you attracted this person to your life. What lessons are you supposed to learn from him? Remember that nothing happens by chance. Everything has a cause. There’s no such thing as a coincidence.

Karmic relationship

2) This brings us to the questions from another reader. “How do you finish a karmic relationship? How will you know if the relationship is a karmic one? What is a soul contract? Does it automatically end? Or do you have to do something to end it?”

Soul contract could refer to karma. It’s a first time for me to hear of this term. All close relationships—for example, husband and wife, lovers, parent and child, business associates, close friendships or mortal enemies—are karmic in nature.

You meet each other to work out your karma or learn from them. The only way to end karma is to know why it is there in the first place. You don’t end it simply by wishing or desiring it to end. You have to accept it.

‘Halo effect’
3) “Is it okay to believe in fortune tellers?”

It depends on the reliability of the fortune teller. But many of them are not worth their salt. They rely for their reputation on the success of one or two predictions that came true, but ignore the majority of predictions that turned out to be wrong. The “halo effect” makes them get away with this false impression.

4) “My son-in-law just died. When cremated, they found a white bone with a greenish color. What does that mean?”

I don’t know. Maybe it is best to ask the funeral parlor or the person who did the cremation. What it means could be just inadequate temperature or the time element for the body to entirely turn to dust.

5) “Is pyrokinesis real? How can we know if possession is authentic? Can crystals conduct electricity?”

Pyrokinesis means being able to produce fire through mental power alone. It is a rare ability, and there are very few cases that have been recorded in the history of paranormal phenomena or in the annals of paranormal phenomena.

Regarding possession, do you mean if a person is merely faking possession? I once encountered a false possession case when I was working in a large shoe manufacturing company in Quezon City. A female factory worker was caught sneaking a pair of rubber shoes out the gate. When investigated, she went into a “trance” and, speaking in a male voice, said she was the factory workers’ uncle who had died and said the woman is innocent.

When brought to me, I asked the so-called entity when he died and how. The answer proved to be wrong. So we found out she was just pretending. She was subsequently dismissed and charges filed against her.

Yes, quartz crystals emit piezoelectric energy. In crystals, electric current is due to the motion of both ions and electron. Ions move by hopping occasionally from site to site. All solids conduct electricity in this manner. When the voltage is zero, there is no net current because the ions hop randomly in all directions. The electricity conducted by crystals is quite small and negligible.

6) A year ago, somebody called up by phone and asked if he and his wife could come over to consult me. They didn’t tell me the nature of their problem, but they felt I could help them. So I asked them to come over.

They said their problem was that they have been trying to have a baby for two years now, but couldn’t. They have tried everything, including medication, but without success. They felt there might be something supernatural or paranormal about their problem.

I didn’t think so. When they asked me what they could do, I told them to go to Obando, Bulacan, offer eggs to Sta. Clara and dance before the image of the saint holding the eggs. That should do the trick. I never heard from them again.
