3 simple ways to maximize your freezer space
Freezers are versatile appliances that act like a pause button for our food which is why we turn to our freezers whenever we want to store leftover meals. As much as we want for no food to go to waste, sometimes however, we pile everything inside the freezer not minding the fact that its organization also plays a role in preserving our food. Knowing how to store and organize your freezer properly will help you maximize its capacity and make each meal fresher for longer.
1. Know what can actually be frozen
As much as we want all our food to be preserved, some just really don’t freeze well. Fried foods, for instance, become mushy, while cream-based soups and sauces tend to separate and curdle when thawed. Water-rich vegetables like lettuce and cucumbers become soggy and limp, and soft cheeses like cottage cheese lose their texture when they return to room temperature.
2. Ditch the boxes
Quick frozen meals and ice cream bars usually come in those bulky cardboard boxes. Instead, just get the food inside and throw away those carton packages and replace with freezer bags. Use a permanent marker to label it and cut out any information such as expiry date or cooking instructions you may later need and stick them to the side of the bag.
3. Flatten them up
Not only can freezing things flat help maximize your freezer space, it is also essential to take out the excess air from your sealed plastic bags to prolong the shelf life of your food. Put that raw meat or dough in a freezer bag, seal and lay it flat in the freezer. You can separate the bags with sheets of cardboard or parchment paper to keep them from freezing together. Once they are frozen flat, stack or stand them up on edge to free up valuable storage space.
