The power of intention

But first let me define the term. Intention is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as “a determination to act in a certain way; resolve.” The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “an idea or plan.” It also means “directing the mind toward an object.”

In other words, intention is a goal or plan. I didn’t know that in medicine, intention refers to “the healing process of a wound.” The renowned English playwright, George Bernard Shaw, used the word in his famous quotation, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

Now, seriously speaking, a well-known scientist and materials engineer, Dr. William Tiller from Stanford University, experimented on changing the pH level (i.e. the alkalinity and acidity) of tap water in 1999 by mere intention, and reported success.

Here’s how the experiment was done: “He had electrical devices imprinted with specific intention. The imprinting was done by four experienced meditators. Then the device was wrapped in aluminum and sent by overnight shipping to a laboratory 2,000 miles away where it was placed beside the target experiment and turned on.

“When the intention imprinted was for the pH level to increase, the device registered an increase large enough to be detected. The same thing happened when the intention was to decrease the pH level. They were able to raise the pH (or lower it) as much as 1 ½ full units, a very large amount. The experiment was repeated several times with the same or similar results.”

However, the attempt to replicate the above experiment by researchers Dibble and Tiller failed to show any change in the pH level, according to a report by Mynn Mason and Robert Patterson of the University of Minnesota.

Different dimensions

Why do attempts to replicate a mental or psychic phenomenon often fail? We don’t really know. One reason I can see is that we are dealing here with two different dimensions or planes of existence, one material (or physical) and the other nonmaterial (or spiritual). When we attempt to consider only the physical, sensory elements of a psychic phenomenon, and fail to consider the other nonmaterial, spiritual aspects, then it can fail.

Dr. Lyall Watson, a South African biologist who wrote such best-selling books as “Super Nature,” “Beyond Supernature” and “The Romeo Error,” pointed out that when scientists tried to photograph or examine in the laboratory objects which were materialized, for example, by spiritual psychic surgeons in the Philippines, they disappeared from sealed containers.

Or when Dr. Hiroshi Motoyama sent three blood samples taken from the same patient by a psychic surgeon to three different laboratories in Japan, the results were not the same. The first two blood samples were human blood, with the same blood type as the patient, but the third turned out to be the blood of sheep. Now sheep is not indigenous to the Philippines.

So, where did that blood come from?

Another attempt to show the effect of intention, this time on human social environment, was made in 2007 by the late American author, lecturer and researcher Lynne McTaggart. In the 29 experiments she ran before her death in 2012, 25 had measured a significant lowering of violence in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Washington, D.C.

According to one report, she has shown that a group mind is capable of changing the basic physical property of leaves, making plants grow twice as high as normal, altering the molecular cluster of water, raising the pH level of polluted water, lowering violence in war-torn or crime-ridden areas and improving the health of patients with diagnosed conditions.

Other researchers who have conducted successful experiments on the effect of intention on physical objects and health were Masaru Emoto of Japan and Dr. Lary Dossey of the United States.

The late Emoto showed that human intention and emotions can affect the molecular structure of water, and Dossey showed that prayer can have positive effects on patients with heart and other health problems.

Of course, there are the usual critics from the conservative scientific community who question the validity of these experiments. But we can no longer doubt the awesome power of our mind to affect physical reality.
