Catbalogan, the capital city of Samar, will host the 39th National Conference on Local and National History on Oct. 25 to 27.
The conference will take place at Samar State University, Arteche Boulevard, Barangay Guindapundan, Catbalogan City.
This year’s theme is “History and Eastern Visayas: Local History in the Context of National History.”
The conference, organized by the Philippine National Historical Society (PNHS), the oldest historical organization of history scholars and practitioners founded in 1941, is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Committee on Historical Research and the Philippine Social Science Council.
Colonial period
Local and national history papers will tackle “provinces and cultural communities, looking at periods from prehistory throughout the colonial period, and especially during the 17th and 18th century.”
Some of the studies that will be presented include the women chanters for the dead in Eastern Samar by Jhonil Bajado of Samar State University; the 1521 Magellan arrival by Rolando Borrinaga of the University of the Philippines Palo, Leyte; Spanish occupation by John Crossley of Monash University, Australia; and the White Russian Refugee Camp in Guiuan, Eastern Samar by Kinna Kwan of the University of Santo Tomas.
The books “Datu Kalun: A Basilan Odyssey” by Ateneo de Zamboanga’s Edwin Pamaran and the 2018 edition of the PNHS Journal of History will be launched during the event.
