Monster-inspired ice cream, ‘bloody’ velvet cake, scary donuts and other Halloween treats

Here’s our adult version of trick-or-treating: visiting these establishments door-to-door for a big dose of deliciously scary treats.

Sebastian’s

Ian Carandang, the talented sorbetero behind Sebastian’s, has whipped up yet another batch of spooktacular ice cream flavors this year. “They come back every year, just like your favorite monsters,” he said.

The three flavors are inspired by “those campy ’60s monster movies” and the abundance of candy during Halloween.

Trick or Treat XIV, which Ian describes as “a bag of candy in a scoop,” is dark chocolate and caramel ice cream packed with chocolate crunch, peanut butter cups, gummi worms, Chocnut and blood-red caramel ripple.

Revenge of the Nerds 3 is bubble gum ice cream with mini marshmallows and rainbow Nerds.

Chocolate lovers will love Worms Infestation: milk chocolate ice cream with gummi worms and chocolate crunch.

The flavors are available at Sebastian’s Ayala Malls Vertis North and Regis Center.

M Bakery

It’s pumpkin season at M Bakery. It celebrates fall’s ultimate ingredient with pumpkin spice cupcakes (pumpkin, dried cranberries, aromatic spices) topped with caramel cream cheese icing and a sugared cranberry; pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap pecan crust topped with whipped cream and toasted pecans; pumpkin spice cake (for preorder); and traditional pumpkin pie (also for preorder).

M Bakery will also serve classic Halloween cupcakes (chocolate or vanilla topped with vanilla or chocolate buttercream) and mini cupcakes.

For an extra treat, grab a Mummy Cupcake, Eyeball Cupcake (vanilla, chocolate or red velvet cupcake with vanilla buttercream), a Boo! Cupcake (chocolate cupcake filled with white chocolate truffle and topped with ganache) or a Ghost Cupcake (chocolate cupcake topped with meringue icing).

Full cakes are available, too, for preorder: Frankenstein, Spider, and Jack-o’-Lantern.

These special Halloween treats will be available from Oct. 24 to Nov. 3.

M Bakery is at Unit 23, One Bonifacio High Street Mall, 5th Avenue and 28th Street, Taguig.

The Grid

Award-winning chefs Miko Aspiras and Kristine Lotilla work their magic this Halloween with creations that will be available Oct. 26-30 at Workshop Bakery at The Grid.

There’s the devilish twist to their popular 17-layer cakes (which you can find in the latest edition of “Lifestyle Best Desserts”), the Bloody Velvet Cake. There are also beautiful mini cakes available: Poison Apple (apple compote, caramel, mousse, caramel sauce), Bewitched (vanilla mousse, brownie, ube sauce center), Hannibal (fresh peach, cinnamon milk chocolate ganache and dark chocolate granola crust).

The Grid is at 3/F expansion wing of Rockwell Power Plant Mall, Makati.

Poison Coffee and Doughnuts

Miko and Kristine also came up with new donuts just for the spooky season.

There’s Spider Web, a dark chocolate lemon on charcoal brioche, and creepy brain donuts that are actually red berry and custard walnut on brioche.

Poison will also be serving pumpkin spice caramel custard on brioche doughnuts.

Poison is at Karrivin Plaza, 2315 Chino Roces Ave., Makati.
