The quest for meaning and expression takes place beyond the corners of the classroom.

In line with Students’ Rights and Welfare Week, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Accountancy Student Council (ASC) held advocacy forums and various activities to highlight student empowerment and create social awareness.

The council also held “Art-Your-Right,” an on-the-spot art-making contest, where students expressed their social commentaries through digital and traditional visual art.

One of the more interesting pieces in the competition was the editorial cartoon “2500 Amvians, 0 Bidets-Unbalanced,” which depicts a hand twisted by a bidet.

Another was made of scrap wires and clay, evoking an image of President Duterte, titled “Hit You With That Du-Du-Du-Duterte Regime’s Reality.”

The artworks were exhibited in the lobby of Alfredo M. Velayo building, UST.

“Messages can come out more powerful when you send them across using a medium you know you are comfortable with,” said Jealar Lazaga, UST-ASC president.

He added that the art contest was a call to action, the artworks a glimpse into what is happening in society and how the current situation affects people, including students.
