It feels like as we get more immersed into the digital world, actual experiences become richer. We crave for premium events that remind us that there is nothing better than personal connections and seeing something with your own eyes, sans the screen.
This is why I think music festivals around the globe seem to be gaining more traction. Every year, the attendees double and the acts become more amazing. Every festival boasts of a different vibe, catering to different lifestyles. There is a festival for every one, no matter how diverse we are as a people. There’s Burning Man in Las Vegas, Wonderfruit Festival in Thailand, Laneway in Singapore, along with other favorites like Rock in Rio and Coachella.
Recently, Day for Night drew audiences at Eveleigh, Sydney. It was held at Carriageworks, a contemporary multi-arts center, which centers around queer art.
Filmmaker and writer Alex Orosa managed to capture the 12-hour festival through his photos, along with his stories. For AUS $45 dollars (about P1,700), you’ll get to experience a dance party, live art exhibit, theater, spoken word, durational cooking(!) along with a cocktail-serving reverie.
Orosa tells me of the different acts, “Between drinks we sing to Vonne Patiag’s call and response karaoke, featuring queer anthems like Single Ladies remixed with black humor, then get
entranced by Bree Van Reyk’s all-girl, rock-classical performance that howls like the moonlight.”
Surreal as it seems, Day for Night is definitely all about uniting people for causes close to their heart. I was fascinated how Orosa told me about how people came in their wildest costumes and their outrageous personalities.
I guess the point of Day for Night is in line with the queer community’s sentiments. There is not only one way to express being gay. Just as every person is different, we each have our own way to express our sexuality. And that’s what makes this world filled with color and music.
