It’s time to get your parents something meaningful this Christmas | Lifestyle.INQ

Thinking of a gift that your parents would appreciate could be a challenge. Sure, you can get them something nice at the mall, and they’ll thank you for it nonetheless. However, there are more meaningful Christmas gifts that would truly warm the hearts of the old folks.

Gifting your parents with a health and life insurance just might be the most unexpected, most thoughtful thing you could do. It’s something they probably never thought they needed, but one that they would surely thank you for when the time comes.

Philam Life recently launched Active Joint Critical Protect, a health and life plan for two that allows you to safeguard yourself and a loved one in the unfortunate event that serious diseases or any untoward incident hits the family.

While not neatly wrapped in a colorful box, a health and life insurance is a practical gift that is worth more than any material thing that you could put under the Christmas tree.

“With a product that jointly addresses the twin concern of health and protection, we are empowering Filipinos to feel secure about their and their loved ones’ future, so they can be  worry-free,” said Leo Tan, Philam  Life chief marketing officer.

While it’s true that your parents may have company-issued health cards and PhilHealth, the 2018 Healthy Living Index Survey conducted by Philam Life’s parent company, AIA Group, revealed that 86% of Filipinos are concerned about the potential costs of critical illness. When asked to estimate the cost of treatment for cancer they expect they would have to bear, over 81% estimate that the cost would have serious financial implications for them.

The concern is justified when the expected financing gap is taken into account. For cancer treatment, respondents expect an average shortfall of 75% of the costs they would have to bear. Across all respondents in the Philippines, the financing gap for heart disease is 67% and for diabetes 55% of direct costs. When asked how they will pay for the treatment of critical illness given the financing gap, 78% cited the government while 56% said charities or trust. Only 27% said this will be covered by their own personal savings and even lower at 19%, by an insurance plan.

These articulated concerns make it even more compelling to avail of a product that can provide additional coverage in case of critical illness. Powered by Philam Vitality, Active Joint Critical Protect promotes healthy living through incentives. The life insurance coverage is boosted by 50 percent as a bonus as plan holders take better care of their health. Now that’s what means to be rewarded by looking after your health.

The good thing about availing the Active Joint Critical Protect plan for your parents is that they will be protected from the most common critical illnesses among Filipinos, which include heart attack, stroke, and cancer. If no claim is made after the plan’s standard period of 10 years, it automatically renews.

By gifting your parents with this product, you can protect two people in your family right away—yourself and one of your parents or both of your parents in only one plan.

Tan said: “More than providing inspiration, we have the actual tool to help them continue living healthily with Philam Vitality—by rewarding them for knowing and improving their health. At the end of the day, we are doing these to help our customers live healthier, longer and better lives.”
