Despite being put away, the bright and sparkly décor of Christmas still seem to be around as the New Year keeps everything shimmery. But we won’t be keeping all things shimmery, as makeup trends for 2012 will continue to be cheery, bold and beautiful.

There’s plenty to be optimistic about this year, especially with makeup. Trends seem to favor anything shimmery, glittery and metallic, as well as a stark contrast of bold colors and yummy nudes. And as I find out, ice-skating is on the list, too.

A recent trip to Ayala Center Cebu for the opening of its first MAC store was a look into the brand’s latest makeup. The store was transformed into full ice-skating regalia, which perfectly complemented its Glitter & Ice Collection.

Ruby-red lip gloss, soft silvery eye shadow and glittery nail polish were, for me, the highlights of the launch.

But getting to chat about makeup with MAC’s senior makeup artist, Owen Sarmiento, was my favorite part. Read on to know more about the collection, and how to wear it as Owen offers us his expert advice.

Tell us about MAC’s Glitter & Ice collection.

It is inspired by ice-skating in a winter wonderland and features Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir. The items come in a special packaging in glossy white with silver logo. Colors and textures of the products are as fresh as ice and as festive as the season.

Can you tell us which are your favorites in the collection?

I personally love the colors of the lipsticks. You can choose from the frosty textures of Eloquent Air, Whirls & Twirls or Soft Sable, if you want it nude, Double Spin gives it an interesting twist and, if you love drama, Such Flare or What a Joy is for you.

How can you apply these makeup looks to Pinays? What are the best looks for morenas, mestizas and chinitas?

Except for the lipsticks, which may be a little pale or frosty, everything else can complement the morena skin tone. The Mineralize Eye Shadows and Paint Pots are very subtle and give just the right amount of shimmer. If you want to make these lipsticks wearable, you may mix them with your existing ones to create a new hue.

Now, when it comes to bringing out the olive skin tone of morenas, it is very difficult to go wrong. Just remember that it is about celebrating the warmth of the skin tone and not hiding it with too much foundation. Applying the Beauty Powder will give that soft glowing look with a little bit of color for a healthy and flushed look.

Most mestizas have beautiful deep-set eyes. Having said that, they don’t need to do anything with them! Instead, they can complement their eyes with bold and daring lips! For chinitas, it’s about playing with different colors and textures on the eyes, and building up on those lashes to make the eyes appear bigger and brighter.

What is your advice for using shimmer, glitter or any sparkly makeup? What are your rules for application?

Do not overdo it! You should have a focal feature when you want to put that shimmer. Also, make use of other textures, such as satin and matte, to balance the look. Examples are: shimmery eyes and satin lips; glossy lips with satin eyes; or shimmery skin (highlight points) with matte lips and satin eyes.
