Sonia Roco directs original play on Jungian archetypes

With its paisley prints and pastel hues, the poster for “Halo Halo Tayo!” looks like one for a dessert place selling all manner of sweets. It’s actually an original, full-length play directed by Sonia Roco, wife of the late senator and presidential candidate Raul Roco.

Now in her mid-70s, Sonia keeps a schedule that allows her to indulge in her interests: traveling, meeting up with friends, and expressing her artistic bent. In her youth, she took a year-long course in speech and drama in London.

When she returned to the Philippines, she acted in and directed musicals and stage plays. “Halo Halo Tayo! The Delicious and Colorfully Complex Filipino Soul” is a production of the Carl Jung Circle Center (CJCC) first staged last June at the Miriam Innovation Center in Miriam College. There will be two performances today (Dec. 14) in the same venue at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Nine gifts

The play outlines the nine dominant archetypes: the Navigator portrayed by an Overseas Filipino Worker, the Child of Eden, Healer, Warrior, Mystic, Reveler, Artist, Islander and Tribal. The archetype is a concept introduced by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, who believed they were models of people, behaviors or personalities.

“We used the nine gifts of the Filipino based on a concept paper written by Dr. Rose Yenko,” Roco said.

Scriptwriter Ruby Paurom stitched together personal stories representing the archetypes, while Marisa Marin composed music based on the stories. There are plans to take the play around the country.
