The year 2019 will be about making statements, whether it’s sneakers, clothes or accessories. It’s about expressing your individuality and crafting your own style through what you wear.
The chest rig
If you find fanny packs already too mainstream, you might want to give the chest rig or chest bag a try. This trend slowly crept into fashion in 2018, started by streetwear brand Alyx. We will be seeing chest rigs go bigger this year.
Jordan 1s
We had an overload of chunky sneakers in 2018. This time, it’s nice to go back to the classics, which will definitely stay stylish beyond a season.
Take, for instance, Jordan 1s, which are making another comeback, it was even highlighted in the latest Marvel movie, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”
A Bathing Ape
Visiting the A Bathing Ape (Bape) flagship store in downtown Shibuya is definitely in the agenda of any streetwear junkie flying to Tokyo. Bape’s statement color blocks and camo prints are easily distinguishable, rendered in shoes, shirts and jackets.
Bape has collaborated with popular brands through the years—Converse, Adidas, Fila, Japanese bag brand Porter—which has added more buzz to the brand.
It will soon unveil a collaboration with a global brand that’s popular in the Philippines. (Bape doesn’t have a store here.) To be You has the details—watch out for it!
Puma
This enduring sports brand is having a moment since its recent release of some cool kicks, like the Puma RS-Xs and RS-Os. Unlike other mainstream brands, its tack for standing out is to churn out low-key styles.
Local streetwear brands
Last year saw the rise of local streetwear brands like DBTK. But there are others that deserve attention—like Progress, a local pioneer, and the fairly young Wednesday, which was founded in 2015.
Wednesday’s founders personally deliver orders to their customers to get to know them better.
Statement earrings
This year encourages you to experiment with statement pieces, acrylic earrings, for example—nothing tacky but attention-seeking and can bring you compliments.
OG designer brands
You can never go wrong with the classics. There are established brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, known for its vintage looks, which people like because of its simple aesthetics.
There are also high-end designer brands like Gucci, which adapted trendy streetwear aesthetics into luxury wear.
Sneaker love
We can never get enough of shoes. Some new kicks coming out as early as this month are the Adidas Ultra Boost “Game of Thrones” collection, the Off-White x Nike Air Max 90s, and the Nike x Sacai collab.
