Fashion never fails to excite as Spring 2019 trends start appearing. Since the items debuted last year on major runways, you’ll see a trickle-down of certain prints and cuts at your favorite fashion spots.
I’m here to help you decipher them. What’s fun about fashion is that there is always a story.
A color is not just the hot shade of the season. Usually, it’s a reaction to past trends. Or perhaps it’s the chosen color of a generation. (Hello, millennial pink!) Some cuts reflect the current sociopolitical movements alive in news headlines. Bags and other accessories are inspired by a certain industry.
For 2019, spring continues to tell the story of the #metoo movement. Women are loud and proud everywhere. And they are taking charge more and more. It’s reflected in the comfortable tailoring that’s all over women’s wear.
WhoWhatWear reports how women empowerment and femininity collide on the runway. Ultimately, fashion is an individual choice, and women will not be judged for it. You can see it in the designs of Dries Van Noten, Burberry, Stella McCartney and Loewe.
Living coral may indeed be the color of the year. But for Spring 2019, expect to see many shades of beige. We’ve been in love with Pinterest- and Instagram-friendly colors of blush pink, oatmeal, soft caramel, off-white. They reflect a versatility but also a subtle strength.
Leopard prints
On the other end of the spectrum, prints are still alive. Among animal prints, a particular favorite is the leopard.
I love leopard, and I even consider it a neutral. I always have a few pieces in leopard that I wear when I need to give something casual a bit of flair.
If you feel extra adventurous, Gucci, Rochas and Richard Quinn are going full leopard this season. Otherwise, a pair of leopard print pants or a midi skirt would be enough to update your casual looks.
Prints are also in vogue, like tie-dyes and loud florals. It fits the sunny weather we will be enjoying in the next few months.
I can hear Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada”: “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.”
But take note that these aren’t like dainty flowers. They are big and they make a statement. Plus, they come in the most vibrant colors.
For inspiration, look to Michael Kors and Carolina Herrera.
Tie-dyes are back in style due to their naturally rebellious look. It coincides with the revival of all things ’80s. Look to Prabal Gurung and Prada for your tie-dyes, and don’t be afraid to pair them with some distressed denim if you want that total flashback look.
Proenza Schouler, Chanel, Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Stella McCartney are your references to the denim trend of Spring 2019.
Transparent bags
As for accessories, a few things that have been loved are still on trend. There’s the transparent bags that are now the chic girl’s pick after the wicker bags.
But keep an eye out for tiny bags worn as necklaces. It was spotted on the runways of Burberry, Gabriela Hearst and Nanushka.
Whatever floats your fancy, it’s a gateway to fun and full self-expression. I love how trends reflect a growing consciousness. But I also appreciate that they can go extreme.
You have the minimalist colors, but it’s balanced out by various prints. You can even put them together! It all depends on you and what you want to achieve this season.
