Good webtoons make great television. The series “My ID is Gangnam Beauty,” “The Sound of Heart” and even Kim Eun-hee’s “Land of the Gods” (“Kingdom”) are just some of the webtoons that became successful shows.
Webtoons are digital comics that originated in South Korea. They come in vertical strips to make it an easy read using a smartphone or laptop. Each chapter is uploaded regularly on a specific time. Some come with music and even animations.
A few of the popular webtoons in the portal Daum are now available in English through the Line Webtoon App. We’ve shortlisted five popular webtoons that we think will make a fantastic romantic comedy series.

Rose Choi is a jobless and homeless 30-year-old person who serves as an all-around assistant to the reclusive billionaire Daniel Yoon. Her boss is a successful 23-year-old CEO and founder of a tech company.
This webtoon uses the tsundere trope that romcom fans love and crave for. The push and pull between the characters is something you look forward to every week.
Jang Nara and Gong Hyo-jin will make the perfect Rose. Both Park Hyung-sik and Daniel Kang, if ever he wants to explore an acting career, will fit the looks of Daniel Yoon.
‘I Love Yoo’

Frequency: Every Friday
Yoo Shin-ae is someone who experienced misfortunes at a very young age. She accidentally ruins the clothes of two brothers on separate occasions. The older brother Kousuke is cold to her while the younger Yeong-gi is warm. Both take care of her. Honestly, this webtoon has too many ships sailing that we tend to lose track which one is our favorite.
Park Seo-joon or Ji Chang-wook can easily play the role of Kousuke, while Lee Won-geun can be Yeong-gi. Lee Ji-eun will make an interesting Shin-ae.
‘True Beauty’

Frequency: Every Wednesday
Jugyeong has had enough of bullying because of her looks. She masters the art of camouflage by learning makeup through online video tutorials. She becomes so good at the craft that nobody in her new school knows what she looks like at home.
This webtoon has a top-notch storyline. The struggles of getting accepted by peers are put into focus here. We also appreciate how Jugyeong is not a flat character. She’s fun, kind and a little annoying. Chae Soo-bin would be perfect for her. EXO-Ls would also love how the lead male character is named Suho and he is a visual feast.
‘Ghost Wife’
By Saejung
Frequency: Every Monday, Saturday
Liz accidentally sees a ghost one night. The ghost decides to take her as his wife instead of making her into a meal. He follows her everywhere and protects her from other ghosts who want to eat her. He even takes a human form so her friends could see him.
The idea of marrying a supernatural being is creepy. But Korean dramas know how to make creepy charming. Take “Hwayugi” and “Master’s Sun” for example.
Yook Sung-jae’s naughty smile will make him a good Daemon. Lee Se-young could be a good Liz.

What if Olympian gods get dumped through text, too? This hugely popular webtoon is based on the story of Persephone and Hades. The god of the Underworld is depicted as someone who loves good books, loves dogs (Cerberus), and acts like a gentleman around ladies, too.
If this webtoon becomes a drama, Kim Yoo-jung can be the sweet Persephone. It would be good to challenge Cha Eun-woo to play the role of Hades.
