Libera, the alternative boy band

Libera, the angelic “boy band,” will once again be heard in the Philippines.

Watch the London-based boys’ choir live on Feb. 19 at Meralco Theater, and on Feb. 23 at the new Pacific Grand Ballroom of Waterfront Hotel in Cebu. They will be performing titles from their latest album “Beyond,” which features uplifting covers of “Ave Maria,” “Salve Regina,” “Sanctus,” “The Prayer.”

Maestro Robert Prizeman created and directed the acclaimed group. The Libera boys, ages 7-16, attend local schools in South London.

They are Marc Alvares, Ethan Barron, Leo Barron, Nathaniel Bates Fisher, Merlin Brouwer, Benedict Bywater, Dominik Clarke, Cassius Collard, Samuel-Francis Collins, Joseph Cranitch, Tadhg Fitzgerald, John Gardner, Alexander Gula, Peter Kielty, Alexandre Menuet, Mathias Montoro, Oliver Mycka, Neo Parson, Koji Shinokubo, Jack Spicha, Calam Tamana, Laurence Taylor, Rocco Tesei, Romeo Tesei, Benjamin Wevill, Daniel White and Victor Wiggin.

According to their official profile, the talented singers come from different backgrounds, and while they sing religious hymns in pristine white robes, they “do not think of themselves as choirboys,” but likes to be referred to as an “alternative kind of boy band.”

Make that charming “boy band” with celestial voices that conquered both the mainstream and classical charts.

Universal music

Individually, the boys may sound “normal” and “ordinary,” but as a group, they produce soothing harmonies that is trademark Libera. Their universal music has been loved around the world, as seen in sold-out shows in United States, United Kingdom, South Korea and Japan.

Christmas is over, but we still hope to get a treat—a rendition of their holiday hit “Santa Will Find You” led by soloist Isaac London, and maybe the soulful Filipino classic “Himig ng Pasko.”

Libera performed the patriotic crowd favorite “Bayan Ko” during their previous Philippine gig, and it would be timely to hear—and feel—this song again.
