‘Chakra’: Unseen vortices of energy

The Indian yogic concept of chakra, or subtle energy vortices in the human anatomy, is the most difficult to explain, especially to the scientifically trained Western mind. These vortices cannot be seen or felt by ordinary human beings, nor can they be detected by present-day scientific or medical instruments. And yet it is known in the East that their influence on man’s health and diseases is tremendous.

To the mainstream scientific mind, anything that cannot be detected either by our senses, or by current scientific instruments, does not exist.

In the ’70s, however, a Japanese lay scientist and researcher, Hiroshi Motoyama (1925-2015), developed a scientific tool he called the Apparatus for Meridian Identification (AMI) to prove the existence of the acupuncture points in the human body, as taught and practiced in 5,000-year-old traditional Chinese medicine.

The computerized AMI machine confirmed the existence of the meridians and acupuncture points, but also, unexpectedly, of another system of energy points that corresponded to the Indian concept of the chakra or psychic energy centers.

Motoyama wrote the book “Theories of the Chakras: Bridge to Higher Consciousness” based on his years of research.

I met Motoyama in Tokyo in the mid-’80s, when he invited me to speak about the indigenous Filipino’s concept of death in a conference sponsored by his organization, The Association for Religion and Parapsychology.

He tested me with his AMI machine and found that my astral body was loose. That’s why I easily fall into a trance or go out of my body. He said the only other person he tested on that machine who went out of his body was a Tibetan monk.

Seven ductless glands

The chakra (Sanskrit for “wheels”) are centers of energy that circulate in the human body and influence its activities. They cannot be seen or felt by ordinary human beings, but can be seen through clairvoyant vision or those with open Third Eyes.

Traditionally, chakra correspond to the seven endocrine or ductless glands, namely, the pineal, pituitary, pancreas, thyroid, ovaries (in women) and testes (in men), parathyroid and adrenal glands.

Others say that there are seven major chakra and four minor ones.

The chakra have a profound effect on our health, control of disease and even our personalities. Meditating on the chakra can stimulate or boost one’s immune system and fight diseases. We learned this from a message I channeled from a spirit who did not identify himself. Current research has found this to be true.

The American psychic, prophet and mystic Edgar Cayce said during his many trance messages that the Seven Seals mentioned in Revelations in the Christian Bible refer to the seven chakra, which must be opened to reveal divine truth or wisdom. He also said that the Lord’s Prayer given by Jesus Christ to the disciples corresponds to the seven chakra, which can be opened by properly invoking the phrases in the prayer corresponding to them.

The seven chakra also correspond to the seven colors of the rainbow and the seven musical notes.

The latest information about the chakra which I have only recently come across is their connection to the vagus nerve. According to medical science, the vagus nerve is the “10th cranial nerve or CNX and interfaces with the parasympathetic control of the heart, lungs and digestive tract.” It is the longest nerve of the autonomic nervous system of the human body.

The vagus nerve is “responsible for such varied tasks as heart rate, gastrointestinal peristalsis, sweating and a few muscle movements in the mouth.” It is known that the vagus nerve has a vital effect on the heart and the cardio vascular system.

Since the vagus nerve connects to almost all the internal organs, except the adrenals, its stimulation has a profound effect on health. According to one researcher, the vagus nerve proves the existence of the chakra or the seven centers of energy. By stimulating the vagus nerve, he said, we can stimulate the chakra.

And how do we stimulate the vagus nerve? Very simply, through meditation and physical exercise. Stimulation of the nerve also stimulates the immune system, reduces inflammation and triggers the body’s natural healing system. I do not see how the vagus nerve proves the existence of the chakra, but it could be an interesting area of research.

I guess there’s absolutely no harm in meditating on the chakra, is there?
