Expect the unexpected, as far as Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele is concerned. When the luxury brand launched its Cruise 2019 collection, the brand flew 400 guests to the south of France in Arles. The show was staged at Alyscamps, an ancient Roman necropolis-turned-Christian-cemetery now considered a Unesco World Heritage site.
The collection was beyond a visual spectacle—a hodgepodge of various references from ’60s and ’70s silhouettes, Victorian ruffles, tweed jackets and tunic dresses.
“Mr. Michele has vision and enthusiasm and culture to spare, but he does not have a filter,” wrote Vanessa Friedman of The New York Times.
But for Michele, this approach worked, making Gucci again a very coveted brand even among millennials and Gen Z-ers.
