The country’s budget for hosting the upcoming Southeast Asian (SEA) Games is now set at P6 billion after the president agreed to allocate an additional amount of P1 billion, SEA Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC) Chairperson Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed Wednesday. According to the chairperson, the budget increase was done to aid organizers in preparing for the games and to ensure that the country’s hosting will meet world-class standards.

“The president agreed to augment the current budget of the SEA Games because he understood the importance of the SEA games to the Filipino athletes and its long-term benefits to the tourism and economic sectors in the country,” said Cayetano.

The president has already issued a directive to release the hosting funds.

Last year, PHISGOC’s proposed an initial budget of P7.5 billion, but Congress decided to settle on a P5 billion budget instead. The upcoming SEA Games (set to happen from Nov. 30 to Dec. 10) will be featuring 56 sports and 523 events; 11,250 athletes and team officials from 11 countries will be participating.
