Selena Gomez has been spotted wearing a simple black snap clip with her bob, and so has Kendall Jenner. Meanwhile, other models have been seen wearing several clips at once.

Once reserved for bridal hairstyles and school girls, barrettes—which come from the French word barre (meaning “bar”)—were all over the spring/summer and fall/winter collections this year.

The rise of padded velvet headbands, in particular, is part of the wider ’80s revival some brands have been showing over the past year. The trend has been worn by many in the form of plush satin headbands, mainly from the Prada spring 2019 runway, and other colorful versions.

Sold for a few hundred pesos at the drugstore for simple styles, or for five-figure sums for ornate designer versions, like those from Gucci, the varying price points make it an accessible trend for different customers.

While these hair accessories do have a utilitarian function—that is, to keep hair out of your face—it’s less about that and more about the way they look like jewelry for your hair.

But how does one actually make these look grown-up and not like your schoolgirl accessories of childhood years?

Proportion

Think proportion. Use a clip that suits your hair type and texture. If you have curls with a lot of volume, make sure your accessory is big enough to show clearly. A small clip will be

underwhelmed by your hair, but a bigger piece will show it off.

Working with straight hair? Use multiples of the same small or medium-sized clip or hair pins, placing them close together on one side  so it almost looks like one larger accessory, or place on opposite sides of the head.

Keep things minimal. Try not to do too much with your hair if you will be wearing accessories. Do a sleek bun with a few pins toward the back of the head, or a middle part with one by each ear.
