Casa De Memoria presents its Age of Exploration auction on May 11 | Lifestyle.INQ

OCTOBER 27, 2022

Casa de Memoria’s auction, Age of Exploration: East Meets West, will feature a selection of Asian and European decorative artworks to appeal to connoisseurs. The Lhuillier-managed auction house devoted to antiquities, furniture, and objets d’art, begins its 16th auction at the Palacio de Memoria along Roxas Boulevard, on May 11 at 2 pm. Over 170 unique items, among them of “Japonisme” and “Chinoiserie” provenance, will be on offer.

With the success of the March 9 The Casa Open at its new home, The Palacio de Memoria, the auction house is looking forward to another enhanced auction experience. The restored pre-war estate is the perfect setting to enjoy the lots available.

“There is a great demand for Asian inspired furniture, ceramics, and porcelain. This will be our third auction with the East Meets West theme, and the items for auction are extremely rare and yet, not extremely expensive. Our curating team has been very meticulous on provenance and stability of every item,” explains Angelique D. Lhuillier, Casa de Memoria Director.

“I am focused on providing an international auction experience for our guests. We have been here at the Palacio since January and we are very pleased with the number of people that come to visit us. This home has history, and as we continue our restoration, I am looking forward to having events that show the grandeur of a time gone by,” notes Camila D. Lhuillier, Marketing Manager of the auction house.

Highlights of the auction begin with unique furniture. There is a Damascus sgabello-styled rectangular table with bone inlays. The piece, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, is embellished with inlaid bone in geometric, foliate, and floral patterns. The sgabello style is akin to the Italian renaissance, and is prized for its intricacy. Not to be overlooked is a late 19th century Qing dynasty red-lacquered and parcel-gilt tall domed-top cabinet. This piece is admired for its gilt and friezes of fruits and animals.

Among the paintings presented, the team was drawn to the 17th century Spanish school of painting of the Holy Family. A continuing theme for art of the period, the oil is held in a gilded frame to complete the work. Unique is a mother of pearl painting, ascribed to Chinese-Filipino painter Patricio Gaston O’Farrell presenting a rural scene from the 19th to the early 20th century. A similar work by O’Farrell is housed at U.P.’s Jorge Vargas Museum.

Carpets hold a special place in the auction with a Savonnerie-designed knotted carpet from Spain, made in 1933 and produced through the National Tapestry Factory of Spain. Attributed to Michale Stuyck whose legacy is traced ten generations back to the Belgian national Jacobo Vandergotten – with whom in 1721, King Philip IV tasked to create Spain’s first carpet factory.

Ivory is a favorite in the East Meets West auction. Leading the ivory is a sculpture of an Empress with a Bow and Arrow on a chariot. This 19th century piece possibly represents the legendary Empress Jingū. Considered as the 15th Japanese imperial ruler until the Meiji period, the empress successfully led an army and invaded the Korean Peninsula, according to Nihon Shoki, the second-oldest book of classical Japanese history.

These and other unique pieces will be available for viewing beginning February 24, 2019 at Palacio de Memoria, 95 Bayview Drive, Los Tamaraos Village, Barangay Tambo, Parañaque City
