Style your space with chic storage

A handcrafted armoire or a media and bar cabinet has a lot of design potential. Aside from storage, these could be used as an accent piece, a buffet table or a visual anchor that adds depth to a room. Philux, a homegrown furniture brand known for Filipino craftsmanship imbued with Swiss precision, is launching the Maxwell Edit, its first storage collection. The new series is in response to demand from clients who need stylish cabinets to keep their possessions in compact spaces.

“We listen to clients and learn how people live in smaller spaces. Our design is all about multi-function,” said Jessica Kienle-Maxwell, Philux’s head designer.

“The pieces are suitable for any room in your home. They are versatile and interchangeable.  The armoire for the bedroom can be used in the office space. The media cabinet in the living space can be used for buffets.”  Depending on storage needs, the armoire comes in three configurations. One version features adjustable shelves with four bottom drawers. The second version includes a hanger rod aside from the shelves and drawers. The third version has a hanger rod and an adjustable shelf at the bottom.  “The latter was designed for storing items that needed more height such as long dresses,” said Maxwell.

Maxwell Collection favors wood veneer over solid wood because the latter is susceptible to warping and splitting. Veneer, on the other hand, is sturdier because it is made of fine layers of wood glued together to create panels. The armoires and media cabinets are enhanced with slender solid brass handles. Their door panels come in two treatments–a linear rattan matting for a Filipino touch and a decorative veneer with cross cuts of geometric patterns that suggest a transitional look.

Maxwell Collection’s look is rooted in Philux’s aesthetics of clean lines, warm functionality, understated sophistication, and flawless handwork.  The soft tones of its woods soothe and lend character to any interior setting.

Stephanie Kienle-Gonzalez, Philux’s vice-president and COO, said the price range of the collection is based on the choice of wood.

Mahogany

Mahogany is ideal for entry-level prices. Its characteristic reddish brown shine makes the furniture look timeless.  Used as an accent piece, mahogany furniture brings life and intimacy to contemporary space.  A two-door,  mahogany media storage fetches some P35, 000 while an armoire will cost P69, 000. Because it is durable, mahogany is considered an investment.

Ashwood is a weighty hardwood with a whitish to light brown color. It can be stained to look traditional or buffed for a modern look. An ash wood media storage will cost P36,000.

Walnut is valued for its fine grains, rich color, shock resistance, smooth finish, and its lifetime durability.  A two-door, walnut media storage fetches P38,000 while an armoire will cost P97,500.

Gonzalez underscored that ash wood and walnut are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, an international organization that advocates the sustainable management of forests.

“We offer this selection of woods because it helps the brand become approachable,” said Gonzalez. “Walnut is known for its tight grains and density. This premium material doesn’t need to be altered because it polishes to a smooth finish. Interior designers and architects prefer walnut for its luster and uniqueness. But if you are working with a budget, you get the same designs in mahogany.”

Customers can also get their “Philux Fix,” she added, by customizing furniture pieces and choosing their wood, surface treatment, and handles. Philux was established in 1980 by Swiss entrepreneur Max Kienle and his Filipina wife Grizelda Aragon. It started out with rattan furniture.

“The DNA of Philux is family and warmth, translated into timeless pieces that can be passed on from generation to generation,” said Gonzalez. “We highlight Filipino workmanship.  rendered into designs of international standard and aim for top service.
